Theodore Roosevelt

National Park

You want a hidden treasure in the park system? This is one. North Dakota is a state that doesn't get a lot of tourism, even though it is the home of Lawrence Welk's birthplace! Go figure. The location off the beaten tourist path is probably the reason this park is not well known or appreciated. It's a real jewel, though. I discovered this park as a detour on a long trip. I returned at the first opportunity and probably will again. The landscape is rugged and reminiscent of the Badlands of South Dakota, but with a little more greenery and wildlife.

Herds of bison can be seen in many parts of the park and often wander through the campgrounds.
